The Navy sent me to Key West, FL, for training in electronics. I was then assigned to a destroyer escort stationed in Brooklyn, NY. I volunteered for submarine duty and spent a very cold winter in New England before being assigned a submarine located at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. There, a couple of shipmates and I rented an apartment on Waikiki Beach and I have very fond memories of my 3 years in the islands. My wife and her family were living at Pearl Harbor at that time also, but we did not meet until years later.
I received my discharge from the Navy in 1957: worked awhile in San Diego, CA, second shift, and attended San Diego State College.
After about a year and a half, I was offered a job by IBM as a field engineer working on the world's largest computer. I spent the next 32 years with IBM working on one type of computer system after another and it was a great experience. I didn't realize how old I was until I saw the first computer I supported on display at the Aero/Space Exhibit of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.
While living in Austin, TX I managed to get my degree in Business Management at St. Edwards University. I have lived in New York, Montana, Oregon, Texas, and retired from IBM in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1991. My wife and I stayed in Charlotte until September 1995 when we moved to Punta Gorda, FL. We have a great home on a small lake just a stones throw from our boat slip at the marina.
My son and daughter still live in Austin, TX and they love it so much they may never leave.
I have always stayed active; backpacking and fishing in Montana, tennis and fishing in Oregon, tennis and sailing in Texas and North Carolina. Since moving to Florida my wife and I have added roller blading to our activities. This fall I brought my 24 foot sailboat down the Intercoastal from St. Augustine across Lake Okeechobee to Burnt Store Marina. My daughter and her husband provided the able bodied crew for the trip and we had a great time.
I plan to stay active in the Punta Gorda, Fort Myers area calling on my broad experience in computers, networking, and programming to help people and businesses solve their computer needs.
I am excited about living in this area and have already begun to meet and make new friends. It is turning out to be better than I had hoped.
